As a child portrait photographer, I’ve always believed that capturing a child’s true essence goes beyond just snapping a picture. It’s about encapsulating their personality, their unique spark, and their individuality. Recently, I had the pleasure of hosting a special event that allowed me to do just that—through black and white portraits at our local play café, Small Town.
The play cafe, with its vibrant colors, cozy corners, and interactive play areas, provided the perfect backdrop for our portrait event. It’s a place where children feel at ease, free to explore and express themselves. This setting, brimming with energy and joy, was the ideal environment for capturing authentic moments.
You might wonder why I chose black and white photos for this event. While color photography is often associated with vibrant and dynamic images, black and white has a unique way of distilling a photograph down to its essence. By removing the distraction of color, we can focus more on the emotion, expression, and personality of the subject.
In black and white portraits, the interplay of light and shadow becomes more pronounced, highlighting the nuances of each child’s character. The textures and contrasts draw attention to the subtleties of their expressions, allowing their true selves to shine through.
Each child who participated in the event brought their own personality and charm to the session. Some were shy at first, peeking out from behind their parents, while others were bursting with energy, eager to strike a pose. The beauty of these portraits lies in their authenticity. Whether it was a contemplative gaze, a playful grin, or a moment of quiet introspection, every image told a unique story.
To capture the best possible portrait, I focused on creating a relaxed and fun atmosphere. I encouraged children to be themselves, to laugh, to play, and to interact naturally. The play cafe’s environment allowed them to be in their element, making it easier to capture candid, genuine moments.
I also utilized various techniques in black and white photography to emphasize the textures and contrasts that bring out the best in each child’s portrait. From experimenting with different lighting setups to playing with angles and compositions, each photograph was carefully crafted to showcase the child’s individuality.
The end result was a collection of stunning black and white portraits that not only highlight each child’s personality but also create timeless keepsakes for their families. These portraits serve as a beautiful reminder of their early years, capturing a moment in time that will be cherished for years to come.
Hosting this black and white portrait event at the play cafe was a rewarding experience. It allowed me to see each child in a new light. And to explore the depth and range of their personalities through the lens of black and white photography. The feedback from the families has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing how deeply moved they were by the portraits.
When capturing the essence of a child through black and white photography is a powerful way to create lasting memories. It strips away the distractions and focuses on what truly matters—their spirit, their joy, and their unique presence.
So thank you to the play cafe for hosting this event and to all the families who participated. I look forward to our next event (THIS FRIDAY). We will create meaningful and memorable portraits that celebrate the incredible personalities of the children I have the pleasure of photographing.

Personality portraits – for me, nothing beats a classic black and white photo. They’re timeless and free of distractions. It leaves the focus on your child, their personality, and those adorable little expressions that they make that truly show who they are. From 1 – 108, a black and white portrait will stand the test of time and will capture them through all of those phases that in the end we all know go way to fast. Yes, even those really DIFFICULT ones <3.

Something as simple as hanging family portraits around your home can increase your child’s confidence! It gives children a sense of belonging, acceptance, and love that can help their confidence soar. I know from my own personal experience, that in the hum drum of everyday life, with stress and work and ALL of the things, simply looking at my big canvas of my kids hanging on the wall gives me a moment of calm. It centers me. It reminds me of how lucky I am and how grateful I should be. And It reminds your children that you love them. And that they are important to you and that this is their home.
