Motherhood Mini Sessions in March

Celebrate Motherhood with a Special Mini Session in Scotch Plains, NJ

Motherhood is filled with fleeting moments that we want to cherish forever. As moms, we often find ourselves behind the camera, capturing precious memories of our children—yet, we rarely take the time to be in the photos ourselves.

This March, I’m offering a unique opportunity to change that with my Motherhood Mini Sessions on March 28th and 29th at my Scotch Plains, NJ studio. It’s the perfect chance to create lasting memories with your little ones. And your children will have beautiful images of you, their mother, to treasure for years to come.

Details of the Session:

  • Date: March 28th and 29th, 2025
  • Location: Joan Marie Photography, 1589 E 2nd Street, Scotch Plains, NJ
  • Price: $390 ($150 deposit is due at time of booking, balance due 1 week prior)
  • Includes: 2 professionally retouched digital images

As mothers, myself included, we often forget that our children will look back on their childhood not only through the lens of their own experiences but also through the images they have of us together. But these photos are not just for us—they’re for them. They will look at these images as adults and remember the love, the laughter, and the connection they shared with us.

In just a short and stress-free session, you’ll walk away with two beautifully retouched digital images. I focus on the powerful bond between you and your children. Whether it’s an intimate moment with your newborn, playful interactions with toddlers, or an elegant portrait with older kids, these images will be a lasting testament to your role as a mom. And the best part, you’ll be able to use these as your profile picture for Mother’s Day!

Why This Session Is So Important:

  • For Your Children: Your kids will treasure these images as they grow older, knowing that their mother was there with them through every moment of their journey. It’s a legacy of love they’ll carry with them always.
  • Memories That Last: You deserve to have photos with your children, not just of them. These moments are a celebration of the beautiful relationship you share.
  • A Lasting Bond: Being in the photo with your children creates memories that strengthen that bond and will live on in these images for generations to come.

And Mom, I don’t want you to miss out on this opportunity to be part of your child’s memories! Let’s create something beautiful that will be cherished forever.

BUT WAIT! These sessions are NOT just for moms with young children. Oh no, way! As a mom of 2 teens, I want photos with MY kids too! Or what about moms of ADULT children? You deserve photos too! And wait, what about those of you who want a photo with your OWN mom? These are for you too!

Capturing the Essence: Black and White Child Personality Portraits at Westfield’s Local Play Café (Small Town Play Café)

As a child portrait photographer, I’ve always believed that capturing a child’s true essence goes beyond just snapping a picture. It’s about encapsulating their personality, their unique spark, and their individuality. Recently, I had the pleasure of hosting a special event that allowed me to do just that—through black and white portraits at our local play café, Small Town.

The Setting: A Playful Backdrop

The play cafe, with its vibrant colors, cozy corners, and interactive play areas, provided the perfect backdrop for our portrait event. It’s a place where children feel at ease, free to explore and express themselves. This setting, brimming with energy and joy, was the ideal environment for capturing authentic moments.

Why Black and White?

You might wonder why I chose black and white photos for this event. While color photography is often associated with vibrant and dynamic images, black and white has a unique way of distilling a photograph down to its essence. By removing the distraction of color, we can focus more on the emotion, expression, and personality of the subject.

In black and white portraits, the interplay of light and shadow becomes more pronounced, highlighting the nuances of each child’s character. The textures and contrasts draw attention to the subtleties of their expressions, allowing their true selves to shine through.

Personality Portrait: A Journey of Discovery

Each child who participated in the event brought their own personality and charm to the session. Some were shy at first, peeking out from behind their parents, while others were bursting with energy, eager to strike a pose. The beauty of these portraits lies in their authenticity. Whether it was a contemplative gaze, a playful grin, or a moment of quiet introspection, every image told a unique story.

Creating the Perfect Shot

To capture the best possible portrait, I focused on creating a relaxed and fun atmosphere. I encouraged children to be themselves, to laugh, to play, and to interact naturally. The play cafe’s environment allowed them to be in their element, making it easier to capture candid, genuine moments.

I also utilized various techniques in black and white photography to emphasize the textures and contrasts that bring out the best in each child’s portrait. From experimenting with different lighting setups to playing with angles and compositions, each photograph was carefully crafted to showcase the child’s individuality.

The Result: Timeless Treasures

The end result was a collection of stunning black and white portraits that not only highlight each child’s personality but also create timeless keepsakes for their families. These portraits serve as a beautiful reminder of their early years, capturing a moment in time that will be cherished for years to come.

Reflections on the Experience

Hosting this black and white portrait event at the play cafe was a rewarding experience. It allowed me to see each child in a new light. And to explore the depth and range of their personalities through the lens of black and white photography. The feedback from the families has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing how deeply moved they were by the portraits.

When capturing the essence of a child through black and white photography is a powerful way to create lasting memories. It strips away the distractions and focuses on what truly matters—their spirit, their joy, and their unique presence.

So thank you to the play cafe for hosting this event and to all the families who participated. I look forward to our next event (THIS FRIDAY). We will create meaningful and memorable portraits that celebrate the incredible personalities of the children I have the pleasure of photographing.

Capturing Baby Lexi’s First Moments

When it comes to newborn photography, there’s nothing quite like the magic of capturing those first few days of a baby’s life. Recently, I had the absolute joy of photographing a beautiful baby girl named Lexi in my Scotch Plains, New Jersey Studio.

A Gift of Memories (and a Few Giggles)

Lexi’s newborn session was a gift from her mom’s baby shower—a present that promised to freeze time and capture those adorable baby moments. I have to admit, it’s a pretty genius gift. After all, what better way to celebrate a new arrival than with a photoshoot that includes a side of sleep-deprived giggles and priceless memories?

The Final Touches

After the session, it was time for the editing magic. And let me tell you, Lexi’s photos turned out beautifully. I even captured some ADORABLE baby yawns <3

A Lasting Gift (That May Include a Few Funny Faces)

As Lexi grows and changes, these photos will be a wonderful reminder of just how tiny and perfect she was. For her parents, these images will be a keepsake of Lexi’s first days. I say it all the time…photos are one thing that will ALWAYS gain value over time.

Thank you to Lexi’s family for letting me be a part of this special time. It was a joy to capture these moments, and I look forward to seeing Lexi’s adventures as she grows. Newborn Shoot in Scotch Plains with Logan <3

Newborn Photoshoot in Scotch Plains with a newborn baby on a backdrop of stars and moon

There’s nothing quite like the joy a newborn brings to a family. I had the incredible honor of capturing that magic during a recent photoshoot with baby Logan. Logan is the adorable new addition to a lovely family in Fanwood, NJ. As this little boy’s first newborn photoshoot, it was a heartwarming experience filled with love, laughter, and precious moments.

A Warm Newborn Welcome

On the day of the newborn photoshoot, I welcomed Logan’s family into my new studio, designed for comfort and creativity. The moment Logan’s parents walked in, you could see the excitement in their eyes—it was clear how over the moon they were to finally meet their little boy.

A Perfect Little Baby Model

Logan was just a few days old, and like any newborn, he had his sleepiest moments mixed with tiny stretches and yawns. It took Logan a little while to settle into the poses, but we still captured magic! And with the help of his parents, we used a variety of setups and adorable little outfits.

A Family’s Love

As we moved through different poses and setups, it was heartwarming to witness the love and affection Logan’s parents have for him.

Editing and Final Touches

After the newborn shoot in Scotch Plains, I carefully curated the images and brought out the vibrant colors and soft textures. From dreamy, sleepy poses to tender prop set-ups, it was a joy to edit these images, knowing they would soon fill the walls of their home and their hearts forever. I even added an American Flag to one of the images for the 4th of July! Which do you like better?

Newborn shoots are a beautiful reminder of how fleeting these early days are. And I strive to freeze those moments in time for families to cherish for years to come.

therapist poses for headshot on a colorful marigold backdrop

In the world of professional photography, headshots play a crucial role in establishing a strong personal brand and making a lasting impression. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with a diverse range of clients who wanted to step away from traditional headshot norms and embrace bold, colorful backdrops to reflect their vibrant personalities. In this post, I’ll delve into the creative process behind these unique headshot sessions and explore the impact of using colorful backgrounds to make a statement.

Embracing Colorful Backdrops for Personal Branding

Each headshot session begins with a consultation where I work closely with clients to understand their brand, personality, and the message they wanted to convey through their headshots. It was exciting to see individuals who were eager to break away from the typical neutral backgrounds and embrace the power of color to showcase their unique style and energy.

The Impact of Color on Visual Communication

One of the key advantages of using bold and colorful backdrops is the ability to instantly grab attention and create a memorable visual impact. Whether it was a striking red backdrop to convey power and confidence or a lively blue backdrop to exude calm and trustworthiness, each color choice played a significant role in shaping the overall mood and tone of the headshots.

Creative Expression and Customization

Moreover, the use of bold and colorful backdrops allows for greater creative expression and customization. By carefully selecting backgrounds that complemented the client’s skin tone, outfit, and overall aesthetic, I was able to create headshots that felt authentic, engaging, and visually stunning.

Personalized Branding Through Vibrant Headshots

Throughout the sessions, I encouraged clients to embrace their individuality and express themselves freely in front of the camera. The colorful backdrops served as a dynamic canvas for clients to showcase their personality, passion, and unique sense of style, resulting in headshots that felt truly personalized and impactful.

Neutral is still GREAT!

While we introduced color for some of our headshots, we also included a couple of neutral and classic colors, which also came out great! Grey and beige are 2 timeless and classic colors to use for professional headshots. And I am REALLY happy I tried a shot out on my Studio wall because the color photographed as the perfect greige that I will FOR SURE be using in future shoots!

In conclusion, the recent headshot sessions embracing color in headshots were a testament to the power of creative expression and individuality in professional photography. By stepping outside the traditional boundaries of headshot photography and embracing vibrant colors and bold backgrounds, clients were able to make a bold statement and stand out in a crowded digital landscape.

If you’re looking to elevate your personal brand and make a lasting impression with headshots that reflect your vibrant personality, consider exploring the world of bold and colorful backdrops. Professional Headshot Sessions in Scotch Plains, NJ: A Fun Ride through Recent Sessions

Hey there! Grab a seat and let me take you on a whirlwind tour of my recent professional headshot sessions in Scotch Plains, NJ. From corporate climbers to aspiring actors, it’s been a blast capturing the essence of each unique personality that walks through my studio doors.

The Conversational Click

Picture this: a serious discussion about career aspirations interrupted by my sudden “wait, that lighting is perfect!” moment. Yes, my clients have learned to expect my random bursts of photographic enthusiasm. But hey, it’s all part of the magic of creating that perfect headshot.

Lighting Shenanigans

Let’s talk about lighting – the unsung hero of every good photograph. There’s a fine line between “professional glow” and “alien abduction.” Thankfully, we’ve managed to steer clear of the latter (mostly). It’s all about finding that sweet spot where your confidence shines brighter than any studio light can.

Expressions Galore

Ever tried to coax a natural smile out of someone who’s had too much coffee? Trust me, it’s an art form. From the classic “smolder” to the “I’m approachable but not too approachable” vibe, we’ve nailed them all. And yes, I’ve seen the full spectrum of eyebrow raises – from “I’m intrigued” to “Did you just say what I think you said?”

Diverse Tales, Shared Laughs

Seriously though, the best part of these sessions is the stories. I’ve had CEOs plotting world domination (in a good way, of course) and budding actors channeling their inner Meryl Streep. Each click of the shutter captures a snippet of their journey, and I’m just here for the ride – camera in hand and ready for whatever expression comes next.

Looking Ahead (Literally and Figuratively)

As I reflect on these sessions, I can’t help but grin at the memories we’ve created together. Scotch Plains, you’ve been an awesome backdrop to this photographic rollercoaster. And to my clients – thank you for trusting me to freeze-frame your brilliance, quirks, and everything in between.

So, whether you’re gearing up for that big career move or just want a killer LinkedIn profile pic (because who doesn’t?), let’s make some magic happen. Get in touch, and let’s capture your essence – with a side of laughter and maybe a few eyebrow raises thrown in for good measure.

Capturing Authenticity: A Dating Photo Session with an Outdoor Enthusiast

As a photographer, there’s nothing quite like the opportunity to capture the genuine essence of someone through my lens. Recently, I had the pleasure of doing a dating photo session with a young man named Febin, whose passion for the great outdoors is both inspiring and infectious. This session was not just about taking pictures; it was about telling Febin’s story, his love for nature, and his vision for a future partner.

Meet Febin: An Adventurous Spirit

Febin is the epitome of an outdoor enthusiast. His weekends are spent hiking through rugged trails, casting lines in serene fishing spots, and soaking up the tranquility of nature. For Febin, the outdoors isn’t just a hobby—it’s a lifestyle. This passion for adventure is something he hopes to share with a partner who values the same zest for life.

The Setting: Embracing Nature’s Beauty

To truly capture Febin’s essence, we chose a location that mirrors his love for nature, but also a bit of city. The backdrop of towering trees, the gentle rustle of leaves, and the glistening water provided the perfect setting for our session.

Capturing Compatibility in Dating Photos

One of the key things Febin is looking for in a partner is compatibility. Someone who he can share his interests with. We started with shots of Febin in his element, hiking along a scenic trail, his expression one of contentment and peace. These dating photos weren’t just about showing Febin enjoying an activity; they were about capturing the type of environment where he feels most himself and hopes to share with someone special.

Seeking a Long-Term Connection

Febin’s desire for a long-term relationship and eventually starting a family was another critical aspect to convey. We aimed to capture the moments that reflect his nurturing and thoughtful side. In a particularly poignant shot, Febin is sitting atop a tree stump. The calm and reflective nature of this image speaks to his desire for stability, a deep connection, and his vision of sharing peaceful moments with a future partner.

To further emphasize this, we captured Febin in a series of more intimate, candid shots—him enjoying a coffee in a picturesque coffe shop. These images tell a story of a man who is ready to settle down and build a future filled with love, respect, and mutual goals.

Emphasizing Physical Compatibility

Physical compatibility is essential for Febin, not just for shared activities but for overall lifestyle synergy.

Conclusion: A Journey Through the Lens

Photographing Febin was an enriching experience. Through my lens, I aimed to encapsulate not just his love for the outdoors, but also his hopes and dreams for a future partner. The images we created together tell a story of a man who is genuine, adventurous, and ready for a lasting connection.

This session reminded me of the power of photography—not just to capture a moment, but to tell a story, to dream, and to inspire. For Febin, these dating photos are more than just a profile; they are a glimpse into his world, his passions, and his heart.

If you’re interested in capturing your own story or showcasing your unique personality in a dating profile, feel free to reach out. Let’s create something beautiful together.

By sharing Febin’s story and vision, we hope to connect him with someone who not only shares his interests but also his values and dreams for the future. See more dating profile sessions here.

Black and White portraits are timeless

I took some time to take black and white portraits of my son and our dog at The Studio in Scotch Plains, NJ.

Shhhhh….

I haven’t really made an official announcement yet, but my Studio has moved! It’s literally about 3 blocks away from my previous location, but believe me…it’s no small feat! Between going through all of my props and backdrops and equipment to still physically MOVING it to the new space, it’s been exhausting. Mentally, physically and yeah, even emotionally!

Storytime

I’m actually kind of freaked out as I am putting these words out into the ether. As most people who know me already know, I am a divorced mom to 2 amazing boys. They are magic. They are MY magic, transformed into two real life human beings. You see, they are very special. They were both born on June 29th.

And they were only 2 and 4 when I got divorced and found myself figuring out what life was going to look like for us. I knew I did not want to go back to my previous career in pharmaceutical meeting planning. I was an artist. An Art Major, who felt that her soul was dying a slow death every day that I denied it it’s true calling. However, when I decided to TRUST in a kind of miraculous outcome, it happened. Thanks to one of my best friend’s, Jessica, and a NOW best friend, Jody. It all kind of unfolded into this crazy pattern of events. That I will save for another time, but they landed me a job in the Photo Department for Bed Bath and Beyond.

I moved to Fanwood in 2016. And everyday, after dropping my sons off at their Elementary school, I would pass a storefront that was vacant. But there was something about it. Seymour’s Antiques. I would drive by and say someday that will be my photo studio. As crazy as it sounded to me, I still said it. Over and over. And one day, there was a sign up that it was available for rent. Of course I immediately called the number. I forget what they were asking, but whatever the number, it was well out of reach for me. And so I let that idea die.

DEATH OF A DREAM AND THEN A JOB

In 2019 I lost my job at Bed Bath, along with many others. Scared and worried and didn’t know what I was going to do. I feverishly reached out to old colleagues trying to figure out where I would go now, what I would do. I had a mortgage and bills and children. Nothing…

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR…

But you see, I had been asking for something. I had been silently praying for more time with my kids, a more flexible schedule, something in the creative field that would give me financial freedom. I ASKED FOR THIS. And then I received it. As many times I ended my prayers with “I am ready to receive”, I wasn’t quite ready to receive THIS!

And then COVID. Unemployed and now I had a 4th grader and a 2nd grader with special needs at home with me trying to do virtual work while I was trying to find a job. I had been working for a real estate photography company for a brief stint, but that was no longer happening. Who would hire me now??

But…I was LUCKY! I was ALREADY signed up for and receiving unemployment benefits. And they kept getting extended. And while I still felt the stress of being unemployed, the unknown and COVID, I got exactly what I asked for. I had a VERY flexible schedule and I had more time with my kids. Not exactly how I envisioned it, but well, isn’t that how the universe works? LOL

THE SIGN, TAKE 2

And then in 2021 it happened. The “for rent” sign was up again. Right down the street from my sons’s school. A school that I found myself being called to more and more as time passed on. My son has had an IEP since first grade. He’s been on medication since Kindergarten. And he also has had a label of “bad kid” following him around since age 5. He was called a bully and investigated multiple times since then. The kids and their parents continued that narrative. A narrative that negatively impacted a little boy and his family who were already struggling with invisible disabilities that neither the parents or the school seem to understand, nor did they want to.

A LEAP OF FAITH

Moving to this space would keep me close to home and to his school. And I knew it was not only my chance, but possibly the answer to many of my prayers. Including the one that I made back in 2016 when I claimed that location as my Studio even though I could in no way afford it at the time. And so I jumped. I took a leap of faith. And in May of 2021 I moved into my first commercial space.

I can’t believe that it has been 3 years. And it was not without it’s share of challenges. Friendships suffered, more school issues, financial fears and setbacks. BUT, I am still here! My son was finally granted an out of district placement. In a school where the kids AND the parents understand him. Where he is given grace and compassion. He is stable. And I finally, after 12 years, feel like I am getting my life back. And I am READY TO RECEIVE!

THE NEW SPACE

My new space is beautiful. It is new and not falling apart. I owe a big thank you to my friend Sammy, who without realizing it, contacted me to see if I was interested in a new space. It was 3 months before my lease was up. Again, I am fully supported by the Universe, God, Angels. And I am ALMOST completely moved in. THIS time I am actually going to make an effort to have a Grand Opening. I finally feel like it is my time.

So I had my little guy come to the new space to work on some lighting since I’m still getting used to the lower ceilings. And our doggy, Roscoe, accompanied us.

Life is weird and crazy and beautiful and unknown and mysterious and magical and hard and all of the things. And I really appreciate this journey that I am on. It is shaping the person that I am and that I am becoming every single day. And I am forever grateful.

Now I have to decide what I want to manifest next 😉

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU

This journey was not just about capturing images; it was about telling a story of wellness, strength, and community.

Before diving into the shoot, I engaged in extensive discussions with the Leanne at M Pilates + Yoga.
