There is a specific kind of energy that comes with a Mini Session day (fast-paced, high-energy, and full of variety). My most recent event in April was no exception! I had the pleasure of hosting six headshot clients and one very dapper young man for his Communion portraits right here in the Scotch Plains area.

Although, by the end of these marathon days, I’ll admit—I am exhausted! But my heart is always so full. There is something so rewarding about helping seven different people find their confidence in front of the camera all in one afternoon.

The “Pop” of Pink: Modern Professional Looks

And one of the highlights of the April date was our variety of setups. But while we offered several classic looks, my absolute favorite was the hot pink backdrop paired with strip lights. The lighting setup was designed to create a beautiful rim light around my clients, making them truly “pop” against that vibrant color. Whether it was for a creative professional, a brand refresh, or a personality portrait, the results were stunning, modern, and anything but “boring corporate.”

Is a Mini Session Right for You?

New Jersey Headshot Mini Sessions are the “sweet spot” of professional photography. Mini sessions are designed for individuals who need high-quality digital images without the time or financial commitment of a full custom session. Afterwards, we select the images you would like to purchase and they get added to my editing queue.

These sessions are perfect for:

  • Professionals: Refreshing your LinkedIn or website headshot.
  • Parents: Quick child portraits or “wrapped” newborn sessions.
  • Daters: High-quality photos for your dating profile that actually look like you.
  • Creatives: Personality portraits that show off your brand and style.

So if you’re unsure if a mini is the best fit? Basically, if you’re on the fence about whether a mini or a full session is the best fit for your needs, check out this blog post where I break down everything you need to know to decide!

Dapper & Divine: Frankie’s First Holy Communion Portraits

First Holy Communion Portraits of a boy posing in his white suit for his first holy communion in scotch plains nj with joan marie photography

There is a special kind of magic that happens when my “professional headshot” world collides with milestone family moments. On the 17th, I hosted a Headshot Mini Event, and while many came for business branding, little Frankie arrived to steal the show in his dapper white suit for some First Holy Communion Portraits.

A Connection That Feels Like Family

One of the greatest rewards of this job is the way the “client tree” grows. Frankie’s mom found her way to my lens through her brother and sister-in-law—my wonderful long-time clients, Katherine and her daughter Elizabeth. I’ve had the joy of capturing Elizabeth’s journey through holidays, cake smashes, and personality portraits, so getting to meet and photograph her cousin Frankie felt like a natural extension of that relationship.

The Guest of Honor: Nonna

The day became even more special because they brought Nonna along to the shoot! Having her there to witness Frankie in his Communion suit added such a beautiful, soulful energy to the room. I love when families bring the grandmothers along—it reminds me that these photos aren’t just for today; they are for the generations that come next. We had such a wonderful time adoring Frankie with his First Holy Communion Portraits, and seeing him through Nonna’s eyes was truly the cherry on top.

Energy, Fun, and a Sharp White Suit

First Holy Communion Portrait sessions can sometimes feel stiff, but Frankie made sure ours was anything but! Full of energy and a contagious sense of fun, he made the session a total blast. He looked absolutely incredible in that crisp white suit, and his personality shined even brighter than his outfit.

Freezing Time in the Big Moments

As a photographer, the weight of these milestones is never lost on me. First Holy Communions are such a significant “big moment.” I love this job because I get to be the one to hit the pause button.

We all know how fast these kids grow, and providing a family with images that “freeze time”—especially images that Nonna will get to cherish—is a responsibility I hold dear. Looking at Frankie’s portraits, I’m reminded of why I do this: to capture the heart, the energy, and the fleeting milestones that make life so beautiful.

Congratulations on your First Holy Communion, Frankie! You (and Nonna!) made my day.

Capturing the Magic: Our Twin Girls Cake Smash in Scotch Plains!

Twin girls with big blue eyes and chubby cheeks eating vanilla cake in a Scotch Plains photography studio

Thinking about a cake smash session for your little ones? They are one of my absolute favorites, and capturing the pure joy (and inevitable mess!) of this major milestone is always so special. Recently, I had the pleasure of welcoming two absolute dolls into my Scotch Plains studio for their twin girls cake smash, and let me tell you, it was a double dose of everything adorable!

From Hesitation to Giggles: Capturing the Magic

It’s completely normal for little ones to be a bit wary of a new face and a big camera – especially when there are two of them checking things out! These beautiful sisters were definitely in a “stranger danger” phase initially. We took things slow, starting with some cozy family posing and individual portraits. This is a crucial part of my cake smash sessions, giving everyone a chance to warm up and capturing those sweet, non-cake-covered smiles first.

And what smiles they were! These girls were just breathtaking – big, beautiful blue eyes that reminded me of juicy blueberries, and cheeks you just wanted to pinch! Honestly, they could have easily stepped off a Gerber baby ad.

Let the Smashing Begin!

Slowly but surely, the giggles started bubbling up. By the time we brought out the main attraction, they were ready! Seeing the difference in how each sister approached their cake was so funny and absolutely adorable.

One sister was a natural cake enthusiast! She dove right in, fistfuls first, fully embracing the sugary chaos. The sheer delight on her face was infectious! Her sister, however, took a slightly more refined approach, carefully examining each bite with serious focus. Watching them interact with each other throughout the whole process – a little shared glance here, a cake-covered hand reaching out to sister there – truly highlighted the unique and beautiful bond twins share.

A Lifetime of Twin Love (and Local Goodies!)

I might be slightly biased when it comes to twins! I grew up with twins as best friends, even dated a twin for a while, and my sons’ grandfather is a twin himself! Having been surrounded by twins my whole life, I’ve always been fascinated and touched by the special, almost unspoken connection they share. Seeing these two interact brought it all back – that unique blend of shared identity and individual personality.

Being so close to so many twins has given me a real appreciation for capturing these precious early moments of their shared journey. I love seeing the dynamics unfold and creating memories that parents will cherish forever.

Making Memories, Stress-Free!

One of the best parts about my cake smash sessions? I aim to make them as stress-free and fun for parents as possible!

  • The Cakes: I provide beautiful and delicious custom cakes for the smash itself, sourced directly from my incredible local baker, V’s Sweet Treats! They are always a hit (and look amazing in photos!).
  • The Décor: Forget about scrambling for decorations! I create a stunning, custom-colored balloon garland specifically for your session, based on the colors parents choose. It adds that perfect pop of fun and personality!
  • Everything Included: From the pre-smash family and individual portraits to the messy finale, everything is designed to capture this significant milestone in all its glorious detail.

Sweetness & Smiles: A Memorable Cake Smash and Family Session in Scotch Plains, NJ

sweet little girl in her birthday dress smiles infront of her balloon garland at her cake smash session

Welcome back to the blog, families of Scotch Plains and beyond! Today, I am so excited to share the absolute sweetness that unfolded in the studio a few weeks ago for this incredible family’s little girl’s first birthday cake smash session. It was a day filled with laughter, patience, and the unique, fleeting magic that comes with a baby’s first major milestone.

If you’re a parent in Scotch Plains, NJ, looking for a cake smash photographer who can capture both the beautiful portraits and the joyful chaos of the big moment, you’re in the right place!

As a cake smash photographer in Scotch Plains, NJ, I know how monumental that first birthday feels. It’s not just about celebrating the year that passed, but about capturing your child exactly as they are at this incredibly dynamic stage. Let me take you through how this beautiful session came together and why these sessions are some of my absolute favorites.

A Family Gathering: Starting with Love

Before any frosting touched a little hand, we began where all great memories are made: with family. I always recommend starting my first birthday photo sessions with some beautiful family portraits. Your baby’s world is built around the people who love them, and including those important connections is paramount to a complete gallery.

Mom and Dad were radiant, full of pride and excitement for their baby girl. But this family had an extra layer of warmth—they decided to include their beloved nanny in the family photos as well as their individual baby photos. This was such a beautiful testament to the support system that surrounds their daughter. I loved seeing their bond; she is clearly an essential and cherished part of their lives, and capturing that was truly special. These initial photos were full of genuine connection and set a wonderful, relaxed tone for the rest of the session.

Pretty Portraits: Capturing the Calm Before the Cake

After we finished with the family photos, we focused on some “clean” portraits of our guest of honor. This little lady, rocking the most adorable pig tails you’ve ever seen, looked like an absolute dream in a delicate lavender dress against a soft, neutral backdrop.

This part of the 1st birthday photo session is key. It allows us to capture the classic, beautiful portraits of your baby—the quiet moments, the curious expressions, and the outfit you spent weeks picking out—before the wild, cake-filled fun begins. She was such a sweet soul, observing the studio with gentle curiosity.

The Cake Smash: From Timid to Triumph!

Finally, it was time for the main event—the cake smash session! The scene was set: a beautifully designed set that complemented her lavender outfit, and a stunning custom cake.

But here’s the reality of working with one-year-olds: they can be unpredictable! Our little star was a little timid at first. The texture of the frosting felt new, and she wasn’t quite sure what all the fuss was about. This is completely normal! As an experienced Scotch Plains NJ newborn and family photographer, I know that patience is the most important tool in my kit. We took our time, let Mom and Dad encourage her gently, and kept the mood light and fun.

And then, it happened! A smile broke through. She got a little taste of the frosting, her guard came down, and she realized just how much fun this was. From that moment on, it was pure joy. She started playing peek-a-boo with me, giggling away, and by the end, she was beaming, covered in delicious mess, and showing us her true, playful personality. This kind of authentic joy is what I live to capture!

The Lasting Value of Family Photography

Witnessing that transition from hesitation to pure happiness is just one of the many reasons why I love my work as a Scotch Plains, NJ photographer so much. I feel incredibly lucky and honored that families trust me to enter their lives and document these precious milestones.

I often find myself telling parents how truly important these photographs are. In our daily lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the routine, but these photos… they are a powerful investment. Family photos increase in value over time. Think about it: a picture taken today might be beloved, but in 10, 20, or 30 years? It becomes a treasure, a tangible memory of a time that flew by far too fast.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for Your Scotch Plains, NJ Cake Smash

When is the best time to book a cake smash session? It’s best to book your 1st birthday photo session at least 2 months in advance. This allows time for ordering balloons, choosing an outfit, and ensuring you get a spot on the calendar.

What do I need to bring to the session? As your Scotch Plains, NJ cake smash photographer, I provide the custom set design and also have some outfits, but you are free to bring your own! I have an amazing Baker in Scotch Plains who will provide the cake. She can even do Vegan! You will typically need to bring a few clean outfits for your baby to wear before the smash.

How long does a cake smash session typically last? These sessions generally last about an hour and a half. This provides ample time for the family and portrait portion, time for classic portraits and then 20-30 minutes for the cake smash itself, allowing your baby to get comfortable at their own pace.

A Sweet Celebration for a Special One-Year-Old

There is something so magical about a first birthday. It’s a year of firsts, a year of growth, and definitely a year worth celebrating with some sugar! Recently, I had the pleasure of hosting Nina and her parents in the studio for a pink and gold cake smash photography session that was truly one for the books.

Family First: Perfectly Coordinated Portraits

We kicked things off with family portraits, and I have to give a huge shout-out to Mom! She did an incredible job reading through my Cake Smash Prep Guide. It really showed in how relaxed and ready the whole family was.

Mom brought a stunning, soft tulle dress that looked like it was made for a fairytale. By total “photographer luck,” I had just received a new shipment of studio wardrobe pieces, including a red knit sweater for the birthday girl. It matched Mom and Dad’s outfits so perfectly, you’d think we planned it months in advance!

Formal Elegance on White

Before the mess began, we captured some formal milestone portraits. We transitioned [Baby’s Name] into a white knit sweater with a matching tulle skirt. Keeping the backdrop a clean, crisp white allowed her personality to be the star of the show. Those classic, timeless shots are always a parent favorite for hanging on the walls at home.

The Main Event: The Cake Smash!

Then, it was time for the cake! The set was a dream—decorated with light pink balloons and touches of shimmering gold.

Mom had clearly been “practicing” at home because this little lady was no stranger to cake! She dove right in, and the expressions we caught were pure gold. From her signature crinkled-nose smile to her hilarious “surprised” look, she had all of us cracking up behind the scenes. There is nothing better than a baby who truly enjoys their birthday treat!

Tips for a Successful Cake Smash

  • Follow the Prep Guide: Like this family did, knowing what to bring and how to prepare your baby for the texture of frosting makes a world of difference.
  • Coordinate, Don’t Match: Choose a color palette (like our pink, gold, and red accents) rather than identical outfits for a high-end look.
  • Let Them Play: The best photos happen when we let the little ones explore the cake at their own pace!

Big Brother to the Rescue: A First Birthday Cake Smash with Siblings in Scotch Plains

There is nothing quite like a first birthday! It’s a year of “firsts” culminating in one giant, sugary milestone. I recently had the pleasure of hosting a lovely local family for a first birthday cake smash with siblings in Scotch Plains, and it turned into the most heartwarming family affair.

Sibling Portraits & Studio Fun in Scotch Plains

We kicked off the session with some precious sibling shots. Big brother, who is almost three, was a total natural in front of the camera. His energy was infectious, and it was so special to capture the bond between these two before the messy fun began.

However, when it came time for the main event, our birthday girl was a little… skeptical. She wasn’t quite sure what to make of the giant mound of frosting in front of her!

Building Trust at the Cake Smash with Help from Aunt Kathy

As a photographer, my priority is making sure my little subjects feel safe and comfortable. Thankfully, Mom brought along a secret weapon: Aunt Kathy.

With five girls of her own, Aunt Kathy is a total pro. She was instrumental in keeping the birthday girl’s attention and helping her build trust with me throughout the session. Having that extra support from someone who truly understands kids made all the difference in capturing those genuine smiles.

Big Brother Shows Her How It’s Done

When the birthday girl remained hesitant about her cake, Big Brother decided to step in and save the day. He dove in with zero hesitation, showing his sister that cake is, in fact, delicious! Once she saw her brother enjoying himself, she finally decided to give it a poke. This is exactly why I love a first birthday cake smash with siblings in Scotch Plains—the interactions are always so unscripted and sweet.

The Sweetest Details: V’s Sweet Treats

We have to talk about that gorgeous (and clearly tasty) cake! It was handcrafted by the incredibly talented local baker and fellow Scotch Plains mom, Vanessa Cardinal.

Her business, V’s Sweet Treats, is my go-to recommendation for milestone sessions. Not only are her designs stunning for photography, but they are genuinely delicious—as Big Brother can officially attest!

Sweet Smiles & Playtime: Our Valentine’s Day Pop-Up at Small Town Play Cafe

Professional child's portrait taken during a Valentine's Day pop-up event in Union County.

As a Westfield NJ children’s photographer, there is nothing I love more than a high-energy holiday event! Our latest Valentine’s Day portraits at Small Town Play Cafe were a massive success. Between the stunning red backdrop and the custom balloon garland, we captured the perfect mix of professional quality and childhood wonder.

Love was in the air (and in the play pits!) at our recent Valentine’s Day Mini Session pop-up! We had an absolute blast hosting families at the beloved Small Town Play Cafe in Westfield, NJ.

If you’ve never been to one of our pop-up events, imagine this: a stunning custom balloon garland, a vibrant red backdrop, and a room full of kids ready to play. It’s the perfect recipe for capturing those genuine, joyful expressions.

The Best of Both Worlds: Portraits + Play

Our pop-up events are designed to be fast-paced and high-energy. We know that sitting still is a lot to ask of a toddler, so we lean into the fun!

  • Camera Ready: Kids show up in their Valentine’s best.
  • Professional Portraits: I capture high-quality, professional shots in a matter of minutes.
  • Open Play: Once the “work” is done, the kids get to dive right back into the amazing play space at the cafe.

These events have become a local favorite—you might remember our Personality Portraits from last season! We love offering these quick-hit sessions a few times a year to give families a chance to get professional art without the stress of a full-scale production.

Is the “Pop-Up” Pace Right for Your Child?

While the energy of a play cafe is infectious, I know it isn’t for everyone. If your little one:

  • Is a bit on the shy side
  • Has a hard time transitioning away from “play mode”
  • Becomes easily overwhelmed by sensory input or crowds

Don’t worry—I have the perfect solution.

Experience the Calm: Custom Studio Sessions in Scotch Plains

For families looking for a more tailored experience, I invite you to my cozy Scotch Plains Photography Studio.

Unlike the fast-paced pop-ups, my custom studio sessions are slow, intentional, and calm. We work on your child’s timeline, ensuring they feel safe and comfortable before I even pick up the camera.

Why book a custom studio session?

  1. Curated Style: We can customize the set and styling to perfectly match your home decor.
  2. Sensory Friendly: A quiet, private environment with zero distractions.
  3. Heirloom Products: I offer exclusive, high-end printed options and packages that aren’t available during pop-up events.

Don’t Miss the Next One!

Whether you love the “play and pose” vibe of our Westfield pop-ups or the boutique experience of my Scotch Plains studio, I can’t wait to capture your family’s story.

A Milestone Summer in Ocean Grove: Celebrating One Year and Fifty Years

Generational Family Photo on the Steps of our Ocean Grove Rental
Generational Family Photo on the Steps of our Ocean Grove Rental

As a Scotch Plains, NJ family photographer, I spend my days capturing the stories of other families. But recently, I had the privilege of documenting my own family’s most significant milestones during a summer getaway to Ocean Grove, New Jersey.

This wasn’t just any vacation. We gathered from across the country—including my brother’s family visiting from Austin, Texas—to celebrate two incredible milestones: my parents’ 50th Wedding Anniversary and my nephew’s 1st Birthday.

Golden Years and First Steps

There is something poetic about celebrating 50 years of marriage alongside a first birthday. One represents a lifetime of built legacy, and the other represents the exciting beginning of a new chapter.

Between the anniversary toasts and the beach walks, we carved out a special morning for my nephew’s indoor cake smash. Using my lighting equipment to professionally light the basement of our Ocean Grove rental, we set up a simple, timeless space for him to dive into his first taste of birthday cake.

The Indoor Cake Smash: Coastal & Calm

While the beach was just steps away, we opted for an indoor session to keep things comfortable for the guest of honor. As any parent knows, a one-year-old and salt air can be a wildcard! By staying inside, we captured those classic, gummy-smile shots without the distraction of sand or wind.

He might have been the one covered in frosting, but the joy on my parents’ faces as they watched their grandson celebrate his first year—during the same week they celebrated their fiftieth—was the real magic of the day.

“We didn’t realize we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun.” — Winnie the Pooh

Fifty Years Later: A Vow Renewal on the Ocean Grove Shoreline

The highlight of our week wasn’t just the cake or the beach days however, it was standing on the sand as my parents renewed their vows. Fifty years of marriage is a monumental achievement, and seeing them look at each other with the Atlantic Ocean as their witness was a moment I’ll never forget.

While I usually have my head behind the lens, I made sure to capture the quiet, profound moments of this ceremony. From the way my brother (visiting from Austin!) looked at our parents, to my nephew playing in the sand at their feet, it was a beautiful testament to the family they’ve built.

I may be a Scotch Plains NJ Family Photographer, but capturing a beach vow renewal in Ocean Grove requires a different eye than a cake smash—it’s about the wide shots of the landscape and the tight, emotional shots of joined hands and teary eyes. It was an honor to document this chapter of our family history.

Documenting Your Family Legacy

Whether it’s a 1st birthday in Scotch Plains or a multi-generational reunion down the shore, these are the moments that deserve to be more than just a memory on a smartphone. This trip reminded me that photography is about preserving the legacy of the people we love most.

If your family is gathering to celebrate a milestone—big or small—I would love to help you tell your story. Contact me today!
