Better Late Than Never Why I Love “Older” Newborn Photography
Well, I’ve done it again! I have waited excruciatingly long to blog. But just like the prodigal son, I return! Too “mom-jokey” for you? If so, we clearly haven’t met yet—welcome to the party!
The Myth of the “7-Day Window”
When Veronica’s mom contacted me, her sweet girl had already arrived. In fact, she was close to a month old! In the industry, there’s a common rule that newborn photography should happen within 7–10 days after birth. Did you know some photographers actually turn away babies who have missed this “magical window”?
It comes from a good place—babies that age are generally sleepier and more flexible—but it can be heartbreaking for a new mom to hear. Imagine you just had a baby and you’re already being made to feel like you’re failing or that you’ve missed a once-in-a-lifetime chance because of time.
No Mom-Guilt Allowed Here
Look, I’m a mom. I’m historically bad at scheduling (people joke I’ll be late for my own funeral). I know the pressure, stress, and guilt we put on ourselves. We don’t need any more of it from the professionals we hire!
So when Veronica’s mom reached out, I said “Absolutely!”
I always set realistic expectations—older babies might be more alert or have their own ideas about posing—but I also promise that we will end up with amazing art. Capturing this stage is just as important to me as it is to the parents who trust me with their investment.
Why Photographers Say No (And Why I Say Yes)
I don’t fault photographers who stick to the 10-day rule. Usually, it’s because they want to ensure they can deliver the specific, curly poses their brand is known for. If they aren’t confident they can get those shots with an “older” baby (sounds ridiculous, I know!), they’d rather not promise what they can’t deliver. Plus, many are booked months in advance!
But if you find yourself with a three or four-week-old baby and you’re worried you missed out? Don’t panic.
Finding Your Perfect Match
We live in a saturated market for Scotch Plains newborn photographers. If one person turns you away, keep calling around! You will find someone whose work moves you and who will welcome your month-old baby with open arms.
And hey… maybe that photographer is me? 😉
Little Veronica certainly didn’t disappoint. Just look at these results!
